Night #3 -Charlie Porter, A Tribute to Joe Zawinul

Guest Chef Johanna Ware

Joe Zawinul belonged in a category unto himself — a European from Vienna, heartland of the classical music tradition who learned to swing as freely as any American jazz musician, and whose appetite for growth and change remained insatiable. His curiosity and openness to all kinds of sounds made him one of the driving forces behind the electronic jazz-rock revolution of the late ’60s and ’70s — and later, he would be almost alone in exploring fusions between jazz-rock and ethnic music from all over the globe.

As a multi-genre trumpeter and 62nd Grammy Nominee, Charlie Porter, who toured with Joe Zawinul extensively through out the US and abroad, has decided to make this show a tribute to him.

Charlie Porter sextet features Enzo Irace on guitar, Nicole McCabe on alto saxophone, Ross Garlow on bass, Daniel Rossi on drums, Matt Sazima on keys  and Charlie on trumpet.

Guest Chef Johanna Ware

A New York trained chef, Johanna got her chops at Public, two of David Chang’s Momofuko restaurants and Del Posto. Upon arriving in Portland, she worked for Cathy Whims at Nostrana, and then opened up her own restaurant Smallwares. After a great 7-year run, she closed the doors this year to focus on new things.  She will be preparing some of her signature Pan Asian dishes including kimchi pancakes, steamed fish in banana leaf, short rib ragu and more.
