Night #4 – Andrew Oliver’s Hot Jazz Trio

Guest Chef Johanna Ware

“It’s easy to assume that Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet et al can’t speak to a younger generation, but pianist Andrew Oliver’s quartet lays that notion to rest.” – Sunday Times (UK)

As an American pianist currently living in London, England, Andrew Oliver specialize in early jazz, stride piano, ragtime, and tango. He performs solo and with the Dime Notes, a quartet putting their own classy and stomping spin on a wide range of early jazz repertoire. Playing yet with two other ensembles, one called the Vitality Five, who are a raucous band that performs energetic and authentic 1920s music and Horniblow’s Hot Three, a trio unearthing a unique mix of obscure washboard bands and modernists 1920s novelty music. Take a journey back to when drinking and having fun was sin and against the law, but people sure as heck did it anyway!

Guest Chef Johanna Ware

A New York trained chef, Johanna Ware, got her chops at Public, two of David Chang’s Momofuko restaurants and Del Posto. Upon arriving in Portland, she worked for Cathy Whims at Nostrana, and then opened up her own restaurant Smallwares. After a great 7-year run, she closed the doors this year to focus on new things.  She will be preparing some of her signature Pan Asian dishes including kimchi pancakes, steamed fish in banana leaf, short rib ragu and more.
