Night #5 – Bobby Torres, A Tribute To Nina Simone
Guest Chef Johann Ware
She was one of the most extraordinary artists of the twentieth century, an icon of American music. She was the consummate musical storyteller, a griot as she would come to learn, who used her remarkable talent to create a legacy of liberation, empowerment, passion, and love through a magnificent body of works. She earned the moniker ‘High Priestess of Soul’ for she could weave a spell so seductive and hypnotic that the listener lost track of time and space as they became absorbed in the moment. She was who the world would come to know as Nina Simone.
Bobby Torres has been honing his unique Latin Jazz sound in Portland for the last 25 years. Before that, he was all over the world.
From New York City, to Woodstock with Joe Cocker, through ten years of world-touring with Tom Jones, to forming The Bobby Torres Ensemble – his own Latin Jazz group in Portland – Bobby Torres has been on the music scene for 50 years. Click here to read more about Bobby.
Bobby will be accompanied by his daughter Julana Torres (vocals), Cameron Morgan (guitar) and Dan Gaynor (piano).
Guest Chef Johanna Ware
New York trained chef, Johanna got her chops at Public, two of David Chang’s Momofuko restaurants and Del Posto. Upon arriving in Portland, she worked for Cathy Whims at Nostrana, and then opened up her own restaurant Smallwares. After a great 7-year run, she closed the doors this year to focus on new things. She will be preparing some of her Pan Asian signature dishes including kimchi pancakes, steamed fish in banana leaf, short rib ragu and more.
Dinner service begins at 5:00 pm, music starts at 7:30 pm. $5 cover at the door. 21+ only.
