2012 Resch Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese
Scharzhofberger is only one of three vineyards in Wiltengen that are classified as first-class vineyard sites by the VDP (Assoication of German Quality and Prädikat Wine Estates). Because it is an Orsteil (it's own district) it's vineyard name can be addressed alone, without the name of the town preceding it, much in the same style as Grand Cru Burgundy. The soil in this vineyard is grey and red slate with a relatively high proportion of loess (sedimentary soil formed by sand, clay and limestone). This Riesling is one of the finest Rieslings we import. It's a spätlese so it has a richer mouth feel and slight residual sugar. The aromatics are subtle but lingering both in the mid palate and finish. This wine is drinking beautifully now but it can be aged many years.
